— One person’s experience with amethyst and sleep. What changed, what didn’t, and what we still can’t explain.

“After completing GIA gemology coursework, I can tell you exactly what gives amethyst its color. What I can’t measure is what changes when someone puts one on their bedside table and actually starts sleeping again. I was the first person I knew who tried this. This is what I noticed.” — Serena

In the world of crystals, amethyst is often handed out as the default answer for sleep. Before I started Zerevia, I didn’t believe in any of it. My background is in UX design; I like things that can be measured and verified.

My own experience with this stone started when I was 29. I was three weeks out of a breakup, living in a half-empty apartment in East Portland. It was a Wednesday, around 2:00 AM. My mind was running in a loop, full of thoughts I couldn’t quite name but couldn’t turn off. I rode my bike to Stark Street Vintage, a shop nearby that stayed open late.

Next to the register, there was a wooden box with a few stones inside. I picked up a purple one with a handwritten tag in purple ink: “Amethyst—for calm nights—$12.” I didn’t believe in crystal magic. But I bought it, took it home, and put it on my nightstand. That night was the first time in months I slept through without waking up at 3:00 AM.

This didn’t prove anything scientifically. But it made me want to understand what was actually happening. It’s why I started studying the Fe³⁺ trace elements and the geology behind these stones in the first place.

Today, we are stepping away from the theory. This is a story one of our customers shared with me. I’m sharing it here because the specific details—what she tried, what didn’t work, and what eventually did—are more useful than anything I could write in the abstract. My own experience with this stone started earlier and differently. But the part about 2am and a racing mind—that part I recognize.

Interviewee: Lena (pseudonym), 32 years old

Interviewer: Serena Delaney

Q1: Can you briefly describe your previous sleeping conditions?

Lena: I’ve struggled with restless nights for nearly three years. Every night, as soon as I lay down, my mind raced like a runaway ticker; tossing and turning until three or four in the morning was common. I’ve tried white noise and changing my routine, but I was usually left feeling groggy the next day. At its worst, I felt like I was working myself to the bone just trying to get a few hours of rest.

Q2: What made you try amethyst?

Lena: I saw a post on a forum suggesting amethyst might act as a physical anchor for a busy mind. Since I’m someone who’s always willing to try anything to stop staring at the ceiling, I invested in a small, 5-centimeter tall Uruguayan amethyst crystal tower. I figured—even if it doesn’t work, it’s still a beautiful piece of the Earth on my nightstand.

Q3: How did you use it specifically?

Lena: I incorporated it into a routine based on three steps:

  • Bedside Placement: Before going to bed every night, I placed the amethyst tower next to my pillow on the nightstand, about 30 cm away from my head, with the single-terminated point facing toward me.
  • Pre-Sleep Routine: Before turning off the lights, I would hold the cool stone in my hand, close my eyes, and breathe deeply for 5 minutes. Feeling the weight and temperature of the stone was a great physical “anchor” for giving my hands something to do while my mind slowed down.
  • Monthly Cleansing: I leave it by the window on a full moon night once a month. I don’t entirely understand the metaphysics of it, but it feels like a crucial psychological ritual to “wash away” the mental static it sat next to all month. (Editor’s Note: Read our Care & Maintenance Guide to learn why moonlight is the only safe way to cleanse photosensitive amethyst).

Q4: How effective was it? How long did it take to see results?

Lena: At first, the changes weren’t dramatic, but I wasn’t resistant to it. During the first week, I started resting a little more, maybe an extra hour per night where I wasn’t just tossing and turning. By the third week, the time it took me to actually fall asleep had noticeably decreased. The best part? I no longer woke up feeling like my brain had been running a marathon all night. I just feel much more clear-headed during the day.

(Editor’s Note: Lena’s experience is her own. We can’t tell you the same will happen for you, and this isn’t a substitute for talking to a doctor about chronic sleep issues. What we can say: the ritual of placing something intentional on your nightstand—and actually using it—seems to matter independently of whatever else the stone is or isn’t doing.

Q5: Did you make any mistakes or take any detours during the process?

Lena: Yes! I fell into the trap of thinking “bigger is better.” I temporarily replaced my small tower with a heavy, 10-pound amethyst geode. Ironically, the massive presence of the cave was too visually loud, and it actually kept me awake! I quickly learned that for sleep, a smaller, gentle crystal tower or tumbled stone is far more comfortable. You want a quiet companion, not a centerpiece.

Q6: Any advice for beginners looking to try this?

Lena:

  • Start Small: A 5 to 8 cm amethyst tower is perfect for a nightstand. Don’t go for a massive geode right away if your goal is just to wind down.
  • Combine Methods: Amethyst is a tool, not magic. I paired holding the crystal with slowing down my breathing to help me disconnect from the day.
  • Beware of Fakes: Make sure you buy a real, untreated stone. I made sure mine came from a seller with a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) policy so I knew I was getting a natural stone with real “Earth’s fingerprints,” not a piece of dyed glass.
  • Lower Your Expectations: It’s not a pharmaceutical. Think of it as a ritual anchor — something that signals to your body that this is the part of the day where you stop. Whether the stone itself is doing anything beyond that, we genuinely don’t know.

Serena: What Lena describes—the routine, the physical sensation of holding something cool and heavy, the act of doing one deliberate thing before bed instead of reaching for her phone—that part I believe. Whether it’s the stone or the ritual that’s doing the work, I’m not sure it matters. The result is the same. We can’t promise it’ll work for you. But it’s worth trying.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a bigger amethyst geode better for curing insomnia?

No. While a large geode is perfect for anchoring the Feng Shui wealth corner of a living room, its energetic output is often too massive and stimulating for a bedroom. For sleep, “Size Equals Presence” works against you. A small amethyst tower or sphere is much gentler and better suited for calming the mind.

I put Amethyst under my pillow and had incredibly vivid dreams (or nightmares). Why?

This is a very common phenomenon known as “Crystal Tuning.” Because amethyst heavily stimulates the third eye and crown chakras, it can cause an initial surge of vivid subconscious processing (dreams) as it clears mental blockages. If the dreams are too intense, simply move the crystal out from under your pillow and place it a few feet away on your nightstand to soften the frequency.

Why do I need to cleanse my sleep crystal, and can I put it in the sun?

Your amethyst works hard every night to absorb your ambient anxiety and stress, so it needs to be energetically “emptied” about once a month. Never use sunlight to cleanse it! UV rays will permanently damage the iron ions and fade the purple color. Instead, bathe it in moonlight or smudge it with palo santo.

About Serena Delaney

Serena Delaney | GIA Gemology Graduate & Founder, Zerevia Serena started where most people do — with a $12 amethyst from a vintage shop, a handwritten label, and no particular reason to believe it would do anything. What followed was eight months of GIA coursework, a lot of time at mineral shows, and a growing frustration with the gap between what crystal sellers claimed and what buyers actually received. She founded Zerevia to sell amethyst the way she wished someone had sold it to her: documented origin, accurate photography, and descriptions that say what a stone actually looks like rather than what you're supposed to feel about it. She writes about what she knows — Fe³⁺ color mechanics, how to read a product listing, why Uruguay and Brazil produce different stones, and what "natural" actually means on a label.
